Merry X-mas!
Welcome to our new world. The big news this year (and the reason for a blog at all…) is we are starting a big trip around the South Pacific and Asia. We sold the house, and will be selling the cars. We figured since we are building the next house we might as well take off for a while to let the property market cool off a bit. It seems like a good plan on paper... LOL. We started this blog page to make it easier to keep in touch, as well as share our adventure with everyone. Please feel free to give us feedback on how the site is working.

This past year we spent most of our free time working on the house to prep it for sale. We did manage to squeeze in a couple of climbing trips and such, but mostly planned for the upcoming year. Our fall weather pattern had pretty much beat us all senseless this time around. Floods, road washouts, windstorms that took out power for over a week across the entire region, all this during a “moderate” El Nino year… The snowpack is already quite substantial, and all the ski areas opened by Thanksgiving.
Western Washington is not known for its white Christmases. Gray Christmases, Green Christmases no problem. On the Oh So Rare occasion, a Christmas with a bright-unidentified glowing orb in the sky will surprise everyone. Nope, no fluffy white stuff for us. Bing Crosby, himself a Washington native, could only sing about a white Christmas after he went of to college… Which happened to be in Eastern Washington: the dry side.

Which brings us around to our need for a white Christmas. We (read: Kimberly) invited ourselves to spend Christmas with our friends the Massengill’s at their parents place. Scott’s folks live on the other side of the mountains in a small town called Winthrop. Winthrop is a western themed town, with classic false front buildings on the main (and only) street in town, functional and well-used hitching posts, a general store, and lots of horse-based activities. This time of year the region is blanketed in white. Bill & Giselle’s place is just out of town, up slope as it may be. They have a herd of mule deer that take advantage of the spilled birdseed as well as the offered apples and greens. They will stand at the glass door just waiting for some yummies. We kicked back, fed the deer and ourselves, and enjoyed a warm and cozy Christmas weekend.
Love to all!
JD & Kimberly
